Frequently Asked Questions
What can I expect from my first visit?
For your first visit, allow 90 minutes for the entire session. The session will start with a thorough intake that will consist of many questions that pertain to your chief complaint and your overall well-being. Since acupuncture treats the entire body system, there will be questions that may seem irrelevant to your chief complaint, but in our medicine everything is a part of treating the whole body. You will be asked to look at your tongue and take your pulse in both wrists, as both are used to gain a better understanding of your overall health. For this, it is preferred that you do NOT brush your tongue.
What kind of training is required to get an acupuncture license?
To obtain an acupuncture license, you must first complete a master's degree in Acupuncture and/or Chinese Medicines from an accredited school. This includes 4,050 hours of classroom instruction and supervised clinical experience which equates to four years of full times studied in addition to the undergraduate degree received prior to entering the Master's program. To obtain a license in NC, after completion of the Master's degree, candidates must pass four National Commission for the Certification of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) board exams before being considered for a state license.
Does acupuncture hurt?
Acupuncture does not usually hurt although there may be a sensation that occurs when inserting the needles or during the treatment. This is a normal response by patients and is considered to be a positive reaction.
What does acupuncture treat?
Acupuncture is most associated with the treatment for pain, but can be used to treat many different health concerns, including women and men's health, stress management, and as supportive therapy for many Western medical conditions.
What do I wear?
It is recommended to wear comfortable clothing that allows for easy access to legs, arms, and torso. It is suggested to wear or bring your own shorts for convenience and comfort.
Is insurance accepted?
Most insurance companies do not cover acupuncture. We are currently accepting United Healthcare and will need to check individual policy for coverage.. We do not accept Medicare, Medicaid, nor Medicare supplementary insurance.
